Tylerastro · Backend Engineer

Open to proposals and new opportunities — email is the best way to reach me, and my CV is downloadable as a PDF.

Backend engineer in Taipei, leading a team of five. Former observational astronomer — my master's thesis was on the stellar flares of Wolf 359, and it became a first-author paper in AJ (2022).

I'm drawn to systems that misbehave at the edge — telescopes, data pipelines, production traffic. Same patience, different stack. This blog collects technical notes, oshi diaries, and whatever else is worth writing down, in three languages.

Experience

  1. 2025.06 – present

    Backend Supervisor

    Pacston, Taipei

    • Architected a greenfield document-automation platform end to end in FastAPI and PostgreSQL: 195 REST endpoints over 44 tables, 1M+ requests a month at a 0.005% error rate and a 39 ms median.
    • Moved a 37 s synchronous reconciliation off the request path behind a Postgres advisory lock, cutting platform p99 latency from 39.2 s to 1.0 s.
    • On the legacy serverless platform (3.9M API requests and 34.9M Lambda invocations a month): cut the primary API's mean duration 48%, and a core endpoint from 244 queries / 2.6 s to 3 queries / 210 ms.
    • Merged 100 pull requests; introduced the team's first CI quality gate and its uv + ruff toolchain.
  2. 2023.08 – 2025.05

    Backend Engineer

    Pacston, Taipei

    • Top contributor on a 207K-line AWS Chalice serverless platform automating U.S. employment-based immigration petitions, including its data-model layer over 125 relational tables.
    • Designed a real-time messaging backend on API Gateway WebSockets and DynamoDB with Cognito-authenticated handshakes — now carrying 1.8M message invocations a week.
    • Architected a bibliometric ETL over the public OpenAlex dataset, sharding citation records across 100 partitioned MySQL tables with incremental syncs.
  3. 2021.09 – 2023.06

    Research Assistant

    National Central University, Taoyuan

    • Built ETL pipelines in Django to reduce astrophysical time-series data, and a Target and Observation Management platform still in use at Lulin Observatory.
    • Researched Type Ia supernova host environments; first author in MNRAS.

Education

  1. 2019.09 – 2021.06

    MSc, Astronomy

    National Central University

  2. 2015.09 – 2019.06

    BSc, Physics

    National Sun Yat-sen University

First-author publications

  1. Simultaneous Detection of Optical Flares of the Magnetically Active M-dwarf Wolf359

Han-Tang Lin, Wen-Ping Chen, Jinzhong Liu, et al.

    The Astronomical Journal, Volume 163, Number 4 (2022 AJ 163 164), published 2022 March 11, open access

  2. A closer look at the host-galaxy environment of high-velocity Type Ia supernovae

    Han-Tang Lin, Yen-Chen Pan, Abdurro'uf

Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Volume 531, Issue 1, June 2024, Pages 1988–1997
